Para Pato is a wine dedicated to Mar’s late father Fausto “Pato” Sosa. We use it to make one wine each year that is inspired by his creative spirit, and thus some of our most risk-taking and singular wines. The 2018 was a Pet Nat of Refosco, our approach to California Lambrusco. The 2019 is a light red table wine taking the idea of a Bordeaux blend in a new direction. Sourced from a single old-vine vineyard planted in 1978, this is a one-barrel blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. We had filled a barrel about halfway with press juice from our Merlot and decided to keep topping the barrel with wine from this site as we pressed off throughout harvest. So quite frankly, we don’t know the exact percentages. Aromatically, it possesses the herbal side of all 4 varieties. There are also the classic pencil lead aromas of Cab coming through, buttressed by the tropical notes of Sauvignon Blanc and the green pepper of Semillon. Texturally it is light and fresh, with only the slightest suggestion of tannin. It is unlike any wine we’ve tried or made, and super sexy. 1 barrel made, all neutral oak, small 10 part sulfur add just at bottling, no other additions. Unfined and Unfiltered.
